MMGM and The Secret of the Fortune Wookie

Welcome to Marvelous Middle-Grade Monday at A Monster Ate My Book Report!
This is a great meme started by Ms. Shannon Messenger, author of her own Middle-Grade Book, Keeper of the Lost Cities.  There are lots of fantastic bloggers out their who are excited to tell you all about Middle-Grade Books, so make sure you check out Ms. Shannon's Blog to get all the links.
Thanks,
Marsh and Emiline

This is one of those weeks where brothers and sisters can agree on something, or as my mom says, "The End of Days".
We both love the Origami Yoda series by Tom Angleberger and to celebrate this RARE occassion we are also having a Giveaway!  We have one hardcover copy of The Secret of the Fortune Wookie that is AUTOGRAPHED by Tom Angleberger. This is a great series for EVERYONE.  All you have to do is leave a comment and make sure you include your email address.

Marsh's Response to The Secret of the Fortune Wookie:
After Dwight leaves McQuarrie Middle to go to Tippet Academy, Tommy has to create another case file without him . . . How will that work?!!? Then Tommy's half-girlfriend, Sara, brings in a piece of origami that Dwight threw out of his window.  One by one, it starts to solve everyone's problems.  But Harvey, once again, thinks this is all a big hoax.

This was a great third book in the Origami Yoda series.  I especially liked it because my two favorite characters from the Star Wars saga were introduced: Han Solo and Chewbacca.  Like the other books, it has a ton of humor.  I give this one FIVE MONSTERS.

Emiline's Response to The Secret of the Fortune Wookie:
Tragedy has struck Tommy's middle school . . .  Dwight is at a new school and Origami Yoda  went with him.  Luckily, a Fortune Wookiee has come to help.  But is The Force within him?
My favorite character in this book was Han Foldo.  He said things that Han Solo would say.  Tom Angleberger really knows his Star Wars characters, plus his last name is really fun to say.  I give this one FIVE MONSTERS.

This is Tom Angleberger's site where you can find out all about him (he's really the best!) and his books:

Marsh's Middle-Grade Monday Book Pick is
Powerless:
Daniel Corrigan #1
by
Matthew Cody

Daniel has moved to a new town to visit his dying grandmother.  After a couple of days of living there, he figures out the town's huge secret--some of the kids possess super powers.  The supers accept him as a friend in hopes that he can save them from the result of losing their powers, and all of the memories involved with them, on their thirteenth birthdays.  Can he save them?
This was a really good book.  I really like super hero books in general but the reason this book shined for me is that it wasn't from the perspective of the super hero.  I also thought the villain was very powerful, mysterious, and evil.  I give this book FIVE MONSTERS.

Marsh's MMGM Pick for this week is The Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson.
My Review of The Kingdom Keepers:
Five everyday school kids get the opportunity of a lifetime.  They have auditioned to be DHI, or Disney Host Interactive.  They are hosts who help guide visitors throughout the Magic Kingdom.  Finn is one of the DHIs and, soon after he becomes involved with the program, he wakes up in the park with no recollection of how he got there.  It keeps happening night after night--both to Finn and the other DHIs.  He and the others have to solve a mystery in the Magic Kingdom or else they will keep returning to the park.

My Response to The Kingdom Keepers:
This is a great book for Disney lovers.  My dad kept recommending this book to me but I never read it.  Finally, my literacy teacher ordered the book.  So, I was, like, "Why not try it?" I mean, I was about to go to Disney with my family.  It seemed like the right time; so I tried it.  One thing that I loved was how I could relate to all the places in Disney that were described in the book.  I wish I could tell you about my favorite part, but I can't spoil the book for you.

I give this book 5 monsters.
Please visit this site to find out more about this series:

We LOVE Disney, so this was a really fun book for me. Here are some of my Disney pictures!

Marsh's Book Report on Lord of the Rings

My Review of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
by J. R. R. Tolkien

Emiline just wrote a wonderful review of The Hobbit.  Now I'm going to tell you the story about what happened after Bilbo came home from his journey.  Here's my review of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Frodo Baggins uncle, Bilbo Baggins, was an adventurer.  In his travels he found the most powerful of the rings, the Ring of Sauron, the Dark Lord.  If Sauron gets the ring back all of Middle Earth will be engulfed in chaos.  Gandalf, a wizard, visits The Shire, home of Frodo and Bilbo.  Gandalf tells Frodo that the Ring must be destroyed in a mountain in Mordor.  But, Gandalf needs someone to take the Ring to the Elven Council of Elrod.

Who can do it?  Will the Ring be destroyed?

My Response to The Fellowship of the Ring:
I thought this was a great book.  This series really encourages you to keep reading.  If you like books set in brilliantly developed world with all new creatures and races, then Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a good book for you.  I really like Legolas, he is my favorite character.  I like how he and Gimli are always arguing.  I also like how J.R.R. Tolkien developed a Sting that glows when Orcs are near it. I also enjoyed how the beginning of the book the author started Bilbo Baggin's birthday party.

We don't have a video for you guys. Sorry! Emiline was sick and it was really gross outside.

Marsh's MMGM Pick is The Compound by S.A. Bodeen

I first found out about The Compound when I was in Literacy Class (a class for READING!) and a few of my friends recommended the book to me.  I thought it sounded intriguing, so I checked it out from my teacher.  I got really into it, so I read every chance I got at school.  When I came home I did my homework and read until late that night. I finished the book in one day! It is definitely a page-turner and it is one of my new favorites!
I give The Compound by S.A. Bodeen 5 Monsters.
I would recommend this book to fans of dystopian.

Visit the S.A. Bodeen's website:
http://www.rockforadoll.com

My Summary of The Compound:
Eli and his two sisters have lived in The Compound for six years.  The Compound is a structure their millionaire father had built to keep them safe in the event a nuclear war. Oddly, Eli has been getting strange patches of internet connection.  Eli is starting to think his father is keeping something from his family, and that the world outside might not actually have suffered the fallout after a nuclear war.
Find out what happens in The Compound.

Here is the YouTube Trailer for The Compound~

“What is a turducken? An exclusive culinary creation available by special order from some little Cajun town down south. Entirely deboned, a turducken consists of a turkey, stuffed with duck, stuffed with a chicken, like an edible Russian nesting doll. Some were stuffed with alligator, crap, shrimp; my favorite was the traditional cornbread variety.”

Who I'd Vote For!

Review by Marsh
Oliver Watson is a strange, pathetic 7th grader, but what none of his classmates know is the has a huge, multi-billion dollar, underground empire--right under his bedroom floor.  He wants to enter the election for 8th grade president.  He has a few tricks up his sleeve . . .
This book was super humorous, especially the descriptions of the teachers.  I also really liked that Oliver had a secret stash of Milk Duds in the out of order toilet.  My favorite character was Mr. Moorhead.  I loved the way Oliver played around with Moorhead's love life and how he tried to help him get a date with a woman who could ruin his life.
This was a superb book.  I give it 5 Monsters.

“According to the fortune-cookie logic most people live by, the best things in life are free. That's crap. I have a gold-plated robot that scratches the exact part of my back where my hands can't reach, and it certainly wasn't free.”
― Josh Lieb, I am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President

Here's a Great Video of Josh Lieb and Jon Stewart:

I got this book as a gift (hint, hint), but you can find it at your favorite Indie Bookstore.

Marsh's MMGM Pick is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel
by Jeff Kinney

The Valentine's Day Dance is coming up and Greg is desperately trying to find a date.  Even the biggest losers in school have made connections to meet up with girls on the big night.  Good thing Greg's best friend, Rowley, is the social chairperson on student council and there just happens to be a girl who doesn't have a date either that is on the student council.  Will Greg get a date in time for the dance?

This was a very humorous book like all the others in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.  I enjoy how all of the main characters stay the same but Jeff Kinney always incorporates new characters into every new book.  What I loved most about this book was the ending, but I can't tell you what happens so you will just have to read the book to find out.

Marsh's Review of Insurgent

After the Erudite declared war on Abnegation, the Dauntless split up into two sides:  the Erudite Dauntless and the Loyal Dauntless.  Tris is a loyal Dauntless that is fighting against the Erudite to destroy the simulation.  The simulations are serums that the Erudite use to take over people's minds.  Can Tris destroy the Simulation?

I thought this was a perfect sequel to Divergent.  I really liked how the book was paced.  I loved the descriptions, like the description of the battle-ruined Erudite.  I really felt like I was there. I think that it was well written and very well planned out.  Veronica Roth's writing makes you think about what you would do in the situations she describes.

I give Insurgent by Veronica Roth 5 Monsters.

Divergent

Marsh's Book Report on Divergent (Divergent #1) by Veronica Roth

Beatrice lives in a society where the citizens are separated into factions: Amity, Candor, Erudite, Abnegation, and Dauntless. The faction each member belongs to is decided by an aptitude test.  Beatrice has always been a member of Abnegation, but on the day of the aptitude test she gets shocking results.

I thought this was a great book.  I loved it.  This book is very intense, witty and filled with great fights.  My favorite characters were Four and Beatrice.  I admired how they were both very strong, cunning and confident.  You cannot stop reading this book.  Once you start, you have to see what happens next.  I recommend this to people who loved The Hunger Games.  I give it 5 monsters.

The Eleventh Plague

Book Review of The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch
by Marsh

In the distant future . . . The Chinese drop a virus in the United States called P-11.  It kills many but some survive, like Stephen and his dad.  One day they are wandering and his dad falls into a canyon with a river running through it.  Settlers from a village called Settlers Landing offer to help.  Stephen finds out that his father has fallen into a coma and it may be years before he wakes up. He also finds out that every one is not scavenging, and they have more that one pair of clothes, and people are actually learning.  But everything is not perfect.  There are also threats to the settlement, like an opposing colony and the dangers of winter.  Can he face these threats?
I thought this book was very interesting.  I enjoyed the characters and thought they were well developed.  I also enjoyed the dystopian setting.  It is cool to picture an American wasteland.  It made me think, what would I do in this dystopian environment?  What would you do?  Leave a comment with your answer.
I give this book Five Monsters out of Five.

In case you needed a little more, here is the book trailer:

Marsh's Book Review of Mockingjay

DOWN WITH THE CAPITAL!!  Here we are after our video for Catching Fire as Tributes.

Marsh's Report on Mockingjay (Hunger Games #3) by Suzanne Collins:

After the remaining Tributes broke out of the arena in Catching Fire, The Capital was enraged and furiously expressed that by violently bombing District 12.  All of the survivors from this bombing go to the rumored District 13 as refugees.  13 has developed a military to fight and rebel against the Capital, and Katniss is chosen as their Mockingjay.  The Mockingjay is the symbol of the rebels, the symbol of freedom from the Capitol.  All the districts look up to her in the time of war.

Who will win the war?
Who will survive?
Will the Districts get justice?
Find out in Mockingjay.

Response:
I thought Mockingjay was a very good book.  I was glad to see the Districts finally take a stand.  The Capital deserved it for every innocent man, woman, and child they had killed or scarred.  I was frustrated to see that Katniss did not get get to participate in many battles, but I loved the outcome of this book.
I give Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins 5 Monsters out of 5.

Visit Suzanne Collin's Website for more information on her books.

Scholastic has a page just for the Hunger Games series.  There are some great author videos that about violence and audience for this series. Remember, Suzanne Collins also has a great Middle-Grade series too.

Marsh's Book Review of Catching Fire

Here are the MONSTER Tributes!

NO SISTERS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO

NO SISTERS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO
(Warning: Some SPOILERS ahead)

Marsh's Book Report on Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
In Katniss's last Hunger Games she caused a spark with her trick with the berries.  It has caused an outburst in the districts.  A group of rebels has formed and Katniss is the face of it.
The capitol has created a new style for the Hunger Games--the Quarter Quell.  Each district has to forfeit two of their victors from the past Hunger Games--old and young--to fight in the arena.  They have done this to drag Katniss back into the arena where they hope to eliminate her.
I really enjoyed this book.  I enjoyed it because I was glad to see Katniss back up and fighting.  I was very surprised that she was back in the arena but I was rooting for her the whole time.  I really liked this book but I still think The Hunger Games is my favorite.

I give Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins 5 MONSTERS out of 5.

This is a video from Scholastic's site of Ms. Collins addressing the age range for these books and violence.

Marsh's Book Report: Behemoth

Marsh's Book Report on Behemoth (Leviathan #2) by Scott Westerfeld

Deryn and Alek are in the Ottoman Empire where they get mixed up with Turkish Rebels.  They have to help them take down the German's Tesla cannon with their secret weapon while trying to keep the Ottomans from becoming Clankers.  It is important that the Ottoman Empire remains neutral in the war--or that they join the Darwinists to help fight the Clankers.
Behemoth was all I was looking for in the sequel to Leviathan.  It had more epic battles between the Darwinist and Clanker armies.  There were also new characters introduced like Lilith, Lilith's father and her Grandmother.  I liked how Lilith was sneaky and watchful.

I give  Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld 5 MONSTERS.

This is an awesome book trailer for the Leviathan Series by Westerfeld, you really need to watch this:

Marsh's Book Report on Spy School

Spy School by Stuart Gibbs
Book Review by Marsh
The CIA has just assigned me to a super secret mission: to give you this book report on Spy School by Stuart Gibbs. I could go on for hours about how great this book is but I have to get back to spy school before I miss my curfew.

Ben Ripley always dreamed of being a spy.  He is always acting out James Bond movies on the playground.  Ben’s dream has come true; he is going to the CIA’s top secret Academy of Espionage, or Spy School.  On his first night there, an assassin tries to kill him.  The next day Ben finds out he is part of a plot to lure in the CIA’s enemies, because Ben isn’t qualified to be in the school.  He is just there because his math skills, on paper, make him look like he is a crypto-genius.  This operation is also known as a “mole hunt”.  Erica, a sixteen-year-old student at spy school and Ben’s friend is trying to help Ben find the mole.  Can they find the mole?

I’m very angry the this book was an advanced reader copy, because that means I have to wait even longer to find out what happens to Ben.  This was a great book.  I love a good spy book, and this one was packed with action and adventure just like a good spy book should be.

I give Spy School by Stuart Gibbs 5 MONSTERS!

I was lucky enough to get an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of Spy School from my favorite bookstore, Little Shop of Stories.  You can find this book at your favorite Indie Bookstore, or your school or local library.

You can find out more about this book at the author's site:

Marsh's Book Report on Leviathan

My Book Report on Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld:

What first interested me in this book was the fact that it was based on World War I, but it has a twist in it.  Leviathan has giant war machines and fabricated animals that are used for airships and as weapons--everything a Middle-Grade boy likes.  When I started reading I was hooked!

There are two points of view, one from an Austrian Prince named Alek, and another from a British Airman (who's really a girl), named Deryn.  They are both sixteen years old but they come from two different sides of the war.  One is a Darwinist--someone who mans and/or uses fabricated animals during wartime, the other is a Clanker--someone who prefers machines over fabricated animals.

I really liked Leviathan.  The coolest thing about it was the machines and giant fabricated animals, and how they fought in breath-taking battles.  I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book.  They showed everything Scott Westerfeld described.  My favorite illustration was of the Leviathan, a giant hydrogen air-breather warship.  It was very detailed.  I also really liked how it was an alternate history.  An alternate history takes the basic facts and changes them to make them into something different.  In this particular one it changes WWI into something with more advanced technology.  My favorite character was Deryn, because of her bravery.

I recommend Leviathan, by Scott Westerfeld, to people who are interested in World War I, and people who are interested in battles, bombs, and many fights between zeppelins and metal pooping bats.

I give Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld 5  Clanker-MONSTERS!

I picked up this book at my school's Scholastic Book Fair, but you can find Leviathan at you school or local library, or your favorite Indie Bookstore.  I'm almost finished with the Leviathan #2, Behemoth.  This is a great series!

Our Book Reviews on Tales of a Sixth- Grade Muppet

Tales of a Sixth-Grade Muppet
By Kirk Scroggs
Book Report by Emiline

Tales of a Sixth Grade Muppet was one of my favorites because I love the Muppets.  Animal is my favorite Muppet because he is crazy good on the drums.  Speaking of Animal, he wasn’t in Tales of a Sixth Grade Muppet that much.  It really bummed me out.  But the book really isn’t about me so I guess I have no room to talk because Danvers, the main character from the book, has his own favorite Muppet—The Great Gonzo. Danvers is the biggest Gonzo fan you could ever imagine.
One night, Danvers is dreaming about how great Gonzo is and then a green flash suddenly appears.  Kermit is there, so is Scooter and all the other Muppets.  When Danvers wakes up from his dream he realizes he’s an orange Muppet with mop-like hair.  He goes to a special school just for Muppets where he meets Bunson Honeydew.  Dr. Honeydew thinks he has a cure.  Will Danvers turn back into a boy?  Find out in Tales of a Sixth Grade Muppet.

I liked this book because the Muppets are my favorite TV show.  They entertain me.  They do crazy stunts and they admit The Muppet Show is a show—or if they are doing a movie, they admit it is a movie.  I don’t like people faking it and thinking they are not in a show.  The Muppets don’t do that.  They even do a theme song that says, “It’s time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show Tonight.”  Keyword: show.    They also don’t fake like they’re not in a book in the book.  (But I don’t really mind if people fake it in books.)
My favorite part of Tales of a Sixth Grade Muppet was when Danvers met Gonzo doing a crazy toothpaste commercial.  That really sent a funny vibe to my head.  I hope you like this book, too.

I give Tales of a Sixth-Grade Muppet 5 Monsters!

Tales of a Sixth-Grade Muppet
By Kirk Scroggs
Book Report by Marsh

One day Danvers woke up. There was a green flash.  Suddenly . . . He was a Muppet.   He went to Dr. Honeydew’s lab in Eagle Talon Academy.  He wanted to see if there was a cure.  They said they would try to do what they could to find a cure.  As he was walking down the hall he noticed a sign for an after school internship with the Muppets.  To get this internship he would have to write a 2 page essay on his favorite Muppet. For a second Danvers was stunned because he wanted to be Gonzo’s assistant  (Gonzo was his idol). He thought he could just reuse an old essay he did for class. Then he noticed that it was due 2 days ago.  He was devastated. But fortunately his evil sister, Chloe, wrote a letter to the Muppets trying to get him in, but it had a catch—she got to put up all her posters in place of his gonzo posters. Kermit sent Danvers a letter…Danvers was the new assistant to Gonzo!

Find out the rest in Tales of a Sixth-Grade Muppet.

I thought this was a great book.  It had lots of humor and action.  My favorite part was when they were driving through the pothole.  It was funny because Animal was screaming and yelling pothole repeatedly.  My favorite character was Animal because of how he always yells things when gets excited.

I give this book 5 monsters because of how humorous and funny it was.

Marsh reviews The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann

Marsh Reviews The Unwanteds

In a land called Quill, every year, there is a ceremony called The Purge.  The Purge is a way to eliminate the creative children from their world.  The creative people are called the Unwanteds.  Alex is an Unwanted.  His identical twin brother, Aaron, is not an Unwanted and he is the one that reported Alex for being creative. He is taken to the Death Farm where the Unwanteds are taken to be killed, but it turns out the Death Farm is really a school to help the Unwanteds turn their creativity into magic.  The Death Farm is called Artime` by the people who live there.  Artime` is a very colorful and artistic place.  The man that runs the Death Farm, Mr. Today, is not killing the Unwanteds, he is helping them.  The people of Quill have found out the Death Farm is really training the Unwanteds instead of killing them.  The citizens of Quill  are going to attack!

Can Alex survive?  What will happen to Artime`?  What to happen to Quill?

I loved The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann!  It is a very good book and I loved that the characters were brave and creative.  I would be an Unwanted that was sent to the Death Farm because I am creative and sometimes I don't fit in.  Sometimes people think athletics are better than arts, but I disagree.  Arts are just as important as sports.   I learned that societies that don't have creative people in them will not work as well as societies with them.  Quill needs the Unwanteds to be a better society.

I give The Unwanteds 5 Monsters,
And, a shout out to Lisa McMann for being a great author!

You can find The Unwanteds at your school or local library, or you can buy it at your favorite bookstore.

Marsh Reports on Dean Lorey's NIGHTMARE ACADEMY: MONSTER HUNTERS

Marsh Reports on Dean Lorey's Nightmare Academy: Monster Hunters

Charlie has a gift. He has been able to bring monsters through portals while he slept since he was very young.  He's always felt alone.  But he has learned that there are others like him.  He is sent to a school called Nightmare Academy where he learns to control his powers.
Charlie accidentally opens a portal and a Class Five (the worst type of monster) Netherstalker starts to walk through.  But just in time, Charlie slams the portal shut, cutting the monster's hand off.
The monster's wrist had an important artifact on it--the artifact allows the monsters to communicate with other species of monsters.  The Netherstalker demands Charlie return the artifact or they will kill his parents.  Can Charlie save them?  Find out in Nightmare Academy: Monster Hunters.
I think Monster Hunters had the perfect amount of action and some suspense to weigh it out.  I liked how detailed it was.  What I really liked was the main character, Charlie.  He was very heroic and determined at times.  I can't wait to read the second book.  I give Nightmare Academy: Monster Hunters five out of five monsters.

To find this book check your school or local library, or you can find it at your local Indie Bookstore!
